How Gamification Improves Retention and Data Integrity
Why behavioral principles belong in ePRO
Gamification does not turn clinical trials into games. It draws on behavioral principles – progress, purpose, responsibility, and feedback – to guide daily study tasks.
That looks like:
- Scheduled videos that engage participant in the study for the right reasons
- Messages and videos based on compliance level that nudges the participant to take action
- Progress bars that show patients their effort counts
- Encouraging notifications that educates and keep participants informed about the study
- Tailored reminders in reliable channels that reduce missed entries without adding to site workload
- Awards and badges when hitting their milestones
This approach works. In studies using Replior’s platform, diary compliance reached 94%, and participation held at 99%, including older patient populations. For clinical operations, that means fewer dropouts and smoother timelines. For data managers, it means more complete datasets, fewer queries, and stronger database readiness.
And in some studies, gamified ePRO is paired with passive measures such as UV or scratch sensors, which capture additional behaviors without adding burden for patients or sites.
Replior CEO Christer Nilsson will present at Outsourcing in Clinical Nordics 2025
Keynote: “Gamification in Clinical Trials: A Proven Path to Better Engagement, Retention, and Data Integrity”
📅 OCT 21, 09:00 PM
If patient participation and data quality are on your 2025 agenda, this is the session to mark. You will hear:
- The science. The behavioral foundations that make gamification effective
- The results. Case studies showing improved compliance and participation
- Implementation. Practical steps for incorporating gamification into protocols
